 Series

Tagline: Can you handle our truth?

The series included six episodes that debuted weekly every Tuesday at 9PM ET/PT on UPN between the dates of May 17 and June 14, 2005, with reruns later appearing on MTV and VH1. Both Federline and Spears are credited as executive producers.

The show largely consists of home videos created by Spears and Federline, along with some added commentary, beginning with their courtship during the European leg of Spears' The Onyx Hotel Tour in Spring 2004, and ending with their marriage that September. The series was released on DVD on September 27, 2005.
Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Episode 1 - "Can You Handle My Truth?"

The first episode involves Spears casually playing around with a new camera, occasionally focusing on other people, but largely keeping the lens on herself. She regularly asks anyone and everyone about their opinions on sex, love and marriage while in London on tour. Sometime during the second half of the special one-hour premiere, Federline makes his entrance into the series, and Spears often mentions their sex life.

The episode pulled in an audience of about 3.7 million viewers between the ages of eighteen and forty-nine, which is nearly double what the time slot on UPN usually gathers.

Episode 2 - "Who Said Anything About Love?"

Similar in subject matter to the first episode, Spears performs more shows for her Onyx Hotel Tour, while at the same time getting to know Federline. The episode also includes a scene that reveals Spears is quite afraid of flying, based on a fear that she'll crash as she did in a similar incident sometime earlier in her life.

This episode only netted an audience of 2.97 million, which is a significant decrease compared to the premiere. However it was still an increase of what UPN usually gathered.

Episode 3 - "Scared to Love You"

In this episode, Spears and Federline's relationship has progressed to the point where Spears reveals that she loves him. However, after Federline fails to respond the same, Spears closes up somewhat about her feelings and confides to the camera for comfort.

In a continuing trend, this episode pulled in an even smaller audience than the previous, with 2.5 million viewers, although it did increase in the key demographics of the Women 12-34 and Women 18-34. According to a UPN press release this episode increased their ratings when compared to the previous year. [1]

 Episode 4 - "Magic Happens"

After a day in Paris, Spears realizes that Federline is "the one" for her, so she ends up proposing. Federline initially says no but later asks her to marry him.

For the first time, this episode showed an improvement in ratings compared to the previous with 3 million viewers.

Episode 5 - "Veil of Secrecy"

In this hour-long series finale, we find out just how Spears and Federline's wedding went down on September 18, 2004 at Studio City, California. Their family and friends, including their parents, had no idea that they were actually going to attend a wedding; they had all thought it was just an engagement party.

After this episode ends, the music video for Spears' single "Someday (I Will Understand)" makes its world premiere.

The episode was only able to gather an audience of about 2.1 million.

 Reviews

The reviews for Chaotic mainly leaned toward the negative, and blasted Spears on her strange behavior and childish attitude. Many labeled the show as a random home video that was not only boring, but at times disgusting. Others, however, gave Spears credit for giving fans a welcome peek into her private life.

The show is often criticized as one of the worst reality television shows ever made, and frequently tops lists of the biggest mistakes ever made by celebrities (such as E!'s Celebrity Oops! series).
