Porn on iPhone: Now You See It, Now You Don't

HottestGirls.jpgFor an all-too-brief flicker, porn made it onto the iPhone.

Until yesterday, Hottest Girls, an Apple-approved iPhone app, had stuck to nothing more racy than girls in bikinis. Then, it went topless. Which, as you can imagine, set the tech-o-sphere abuzz, as middle aged men felt compelled to dispatch lengthy expositions on what this development would mean for "17-year-old boys."
At question, though, was how Hottest Girls had received permission to run with the pics, given Apple's long-standing policy of banning porn from the App Store. But quicker than you can say, "Steve Jobs just has an 'easily treated hormonal imbalance,'" it turned out that they hadn't. TechCrunch is reporting that Cupertino is now blocking sale of the $1.99 app. (See update.)

UPDATE: TechCrunch has an update: It appears it was not Cupertino that pulled the plug on Hottest Girls but the app developers themselves. TC points to a note from the developers asserting that high demand for the app was causing their servers to crash. They are now saying it's "sold out"—an indirect way of saying they've pulled it temporarily, perhaps, to put the brakes on the servers? The note also seems to indicate that the developers will start selling the app again at some point in the future.
